Granite Sealer

A look at the world of granite sealer and related products as well as other sealing solutions.

There is so much that is said about granite sealer that sometimes, I wonder if people really know how to treat their granite floor the way it should be treated. I will start with the most commonly held beliefs about the granite sealer. My aim of course, is to dispel these beliefs so as to set the tone for the subsequent tips that I will share.

  1. Granite sealer prevents stains. This is not quite true as many kinds of stones such as certain kinds of granite are pretty thick or dense and it’s therefore hard for it to be penetrated by the liquid. So, essentially, what this sealer can buy you is time to allow you clean up the spilled liquid.

  2. Granite sealers make the floor shiny. Well this is also pretty untrue, as the shiny surface of granite has to do with a mechanical action using the diamond abrasives, and not a reaction between the granite and the chemical in the sealer.

Inasmuch as it is okay for you to apply granite sealer to your granite floor or counter top, the time you take between periods when you apply the sealer is a function of a few factors such as:

  1. How much of it your granite floor absorbs and this has a lot to do with how porous it is or otherwise.

  2. The quality of the granite  sealer you bought and applied.

  3. How well the granite sealing job was done, which would depend on the expertise of the person doing the job.

When you decide to use granite surfaces for the floors in your house, you need to know that the granite ought to be sealed even before you start using it. It is not advisable to carry out the sealing job when there is much airborne dust in the air as this might affect the quality of the job. You must make sure, however, that you do it before moving in, maybe just after the workmen leave. This will ensure that there is little to disturb the quality of the sealing work.

You must also realize that there are small parts of the granite laying that are not quite obvious, such as those parts hidden by the sinks, which are susceptible to water or other liquids. You have to apply granite sealer to those areas too.

If you are applying granite sealer, you should make sure that the areas in which you wish to apply the sealer are dry. You, however, should ensure that you first clean the granite surface and then allow it to dry before you begin the application.

Okay, the last point is to seal or not to seal. This will be determined usually by what you find on the ground when you move in. If you see that a good job was done by the previous occupant, it might be unnecessary for you to seal it again – but if you have any doubts, it is best that you just do it all over again. You can just get a granite sealer of high quality and apply it.

Granite sealers can be bought locally from stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s, and from many online retailers too.  Make sure you read some granite sealer product reviews first if you’re buying an unknown brand online.
